Three
years and still going strong, the MOTORPSYCHOS have conquered
self-promoted tours and countless regional shows, sharing stages with
like-minded aggressors BROADZILLA, BOTTOM, HONKY, and MODEY LEMON, among
many others. Their music and hard work has caught the attention and won
the praise of publications on all levels, from the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette to national Magazine ROCKRGRL and now we at SCENE.local are
sitting down with the foursome that inspires the request "Don't hate
them because they're beatiful....Hate them because they're beautiful,
talented AND can kick your ass. |

The
MOTORPSYCHOS are: Amy: Bass and back up vocals, Dennis: Drums, Rachel:
lead vocals and Pam: guitar.
Favorite local
venue?
Amy-As far as us
playing, I like Gooski's cause its so small and intimate, we always seem
to pack the place pretty good and it's a lot of fun. And they have cheap
drinks. As for seeing a band I'd probably say Club Laga.
Dennis- I like the pub, it's
loud.
Pam- Yeah, I'll go with the
pub.
Rachel- I like to play at Gooski's and
see bands at Club Laga.
Most memorable
gig?
Rachel- I think the CD
release party.
Pam- Me too….Yeah at
Gooski's.
Dennis- Yeah the power went out
mid set.
Pam- All the good things were at
that show, it was sweaty, lack of power, too many people. That was a lot
of fun.
(At
about this time Amy releases the burp of all
burps.)
Dennis- Man, you should hear
her sometimes.
Pam- She can hocker like you
wouldn't believe, she can hit a moving target at like 100 yards. She
ain't no girlie-girl.
What makes you unique from other Pittsburgh
bands?
Pam- I know the
answer, cause the stuff we play no one else plays. I'm serious, we don't
sound like Creed or that one I hate…umm…Sheryl Crowe. Punk people say
we're metal and metal people say we're punk.
Favorite cities you've played in besides
Pittsburgh.
Amy- Hands down,
Detroit.
Pam-
Really?
Dennis- I'd have to say so. I think
Detroit was fun
Amy- As far as crowd
response they were the greatest. Everybody was so
cool.
Pam- Alright, I'll go along with
that.
What other cities have you played
in?
Pam- New York, Erie,
Cleveland, Akron, Morgantown, and Youngstown. We like going
away.
Amy- New York is just a blur of taxi
cabs and stop lights.
Dennis- I think the
most fun of just being there was just getting drunk after the
show.
Amy- New York was bad…I felt like
everyone's mom. I was the only sober one. I was like "Come on you guys,
Get off the roof!!"
Dennis- Amy wouldn't let me throw the
vacuum cleaner off the roof.
Any label
interests?
Pam- Are we
interested in labels or are any labels interested in us? (laughs) There
are tons of labels interested in us, but they just haven't called us
yet.
Dennis- My favorite label is "Do not
operate heavy machinery after taking these
pills."
Pam- Yeah, that's the label we are
interested in.
Favorite local
band?
Amy-
SOILER!!!!!
Pam- Oh, I know who my favorite
local band is…Modey Lemon.
Rachel- I'm
going to have to think about that, although I do like Soiler, I want to
think of someone else.
Dennis- I don't know
umm….I don't get a chance to get out and see many local bands, just the
one's we play with.
Why do people come to see
you?
Pam- I don't know, we
have a lot of friends and I hope we are good. The thing is around here,
since I've seen so many local bands, you have to take into consideration
who's going to be there and how social of an event is it for you. Who
I'm going to see really affects where I'm going to go.
What do you feel about the local
scene?
Dennis- I think it
could be a lot better. The scene just seems
really slow.
Pam- I think it could be worse and better,
I've seen both. I was talking to this guy at a club in Dayton, trying to
book a weekend, and he said that everything else has closed and he was
the only club in the area. In Erie when they book shows they can't book
3 metal bands because they will only get like 20 metal fans, because
that's all there is there. So when they book a show they need to get a
metal band, a punk band, and a folk band, so now they have 60 people at
that show.
Were you in any other bands prior to
this?
Pam- Rachel and I were
in the band Go to Helen. It was a really good band, if I don't say so
myself, but we only played out four times before we broke
up.
Dennis- I've never been in an actual
band, messed around played with different people, but never had the
actual "Band" status.
Amy- I actually play
in another band now, It's called Reducer. It's my boyfriend, me and a
friend of ours. And we don't really do much and I got board so I
answered an ad for the MOTORPSYCHOS, so they sort of started at the same
time. We hopefully have a 6-song cd coming out in march.
Do you feel being a predominantly female band helps
or hurts you?
Dennis- I
think it helps out. I think its part of the reason we get such a great
response at times. Not that our music isn't good too, but when they see
3 girls on stage and how hard they rock, I think people are like, "Wow,
these chicks can get down!"
Amy- The
problem is, Dennis doesn't pull in enough booty cause the girls are
probably intimidated cause they think that one of us are dating
him.
Rachel- And I mean if he didn't hang
on me at every show!
Pam- Like we would
have him!!
